learning proper swim technique from Coach Coak Matthews and Jim Kelly (See Bio's Below).
You will learn how to swim faster, and learn how to become more
comfortable in open water at this clinic. Coak and Jim will be reviewing: ·
Several drills to
improve technique and performance ·
Proper stroke
technique ·
How to maximize
efficiency while expending as little effort as possible in the swim ·
Sample workouts and
their purpose ·
Buoy sighting ·
Open Water Navigation ·
Open Water Swimming Skills 9:00 am - Meet on Pool Deck at Hendrix Aquatic Center - The Pool Portion of the Clinic will Begin
promptly at 9:30am and go until about Noon. Break
for lunch on your own. 1:30 pm – Meet at Lake Beverfork Park Swim Area This portion will run approximately about 90 minutes and will include open water drills, Buoy sighting tips to help improve your comfort in Open Water. Coak Matthews is the real deal; he has 27 plus years of coaching under his belt, and has helped many swimmers achieve their life time goals. Clinic fee is $30 and can be paid on site at the Hendrix College Aquatic Center Pool. But we do want to get a head count prior to the clinic so please contact Coak Matthews to let him know by Wednesday August 27, 2008. No refunds/No transfers ============================================================= COAK MATTHEWS HEAD COACH One of the most decorated
coaches in Henderson State history, Coak Matthews is in his 27th year as
the university’s head swimming and diving coach. Matthews, a 1995 inductee into
the Arkansas Swimming Hall of Fame, has won 23 conference championships.
He has been named national diving coach of the year in 1990, national
swimming coach of the year in 1994 and conference swimming coach of the
year 14 times. He has also been named a Master Coach by the
College Swimming Coaches Association as well as a level 5 coach (highest
level possible) in the category of the NCAA II by the American Swimming
Coaches Association. During his collegiate coaching career, he has
coached 3 national champions and over 140 All Americans while both the
men and women have finished in the top 10 nationally in the NAIA as well
as the NCAA II, numerous times. Matthews also sponsored the
swim team at Arkadelphia High School from 1983 until 2003. He coached
the Lady Badgers to two state championships and eighteen of his swimmers
and divers at AHS have been named all-state (including Ken Williams). Matthews graduated from
Memorial High School in Houston, Texas, in 1973. He went on to attend
the University of Arkansas, where he swam for the Razorbacks all 4 years
and was an SWC finalist on several relay teams. Matthews earned his B.S.B.A
degree in finance and banking from the University of Arkansas in 1977.
After serving as the head coach for the Houston Swim Club in 1978 and
the head coach for the Quail Valley Aquatic Club in Houston from
1979-82, Matthews came to Henderson State. Matthews and his wife, Mary,
are parents of triplets Sallie, Blanton and William. Jim Kelly Hendrix Swim Coach Jim
Kelly is in his twenty-sixth year at the helm of the Hendrix men and
women's swimming and diving program. He is also a professor of
Kinesiology and teaches Anatomy and Kinesiology. During his tenure,
Hendrix swimmers have won numerous conference and national honors; in
the pool and in the classroom. Kelly has coached 74 All-Americans, as
well as many conference champions and All-conference selections. He is
known for his innovative approach to coaching. His
first collegiate coaching position was at Genesee Community College in
Batavia, New York. This was followed by a stint at State University
College in Potsdam, New York. There he coached his team to a conference
crown and was named State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
Coach of the Year. Following that experience, Kelly went to Appalachian
State University in Boone, North Carolina.
